IGN is reporting that the deal between EA and Marvel that would've seen EA developing a next gen fighter based on Marvel properties has been terminated. Considering EA Chicago's closure in November, this is probably just the logical next step in deductive reasoning, but it does come with a bit of an additional "hurrah" for fans. According to Justin Lombros (VP of Marvel Interactive), despite the deal between EA and Marvel falling through the cracks, this setback is "not affect Marvel's ongoing plans to release fighting games based on the Marvel properties in the future."
IGN is quick to point out that it seems that Marvel is intent on pursuing a character based fighting game, but it hasn't revealed what developers or publishers may be involved.
Now I know this is wishful thinking, but with Street Fighter IV coming out, is it too soon to go ahead and start requesting Marvel vs. Capcom 3?
Perhaps... But one thing is for sure - Justin Lombros is a fan and recognizes the value of the Marvel vs. Capcom brand. Check out this Gamasutra interview from September. I'll point out my favorite passage (answered as a response to possibly putting Marvel vs. Capcom or Marvel Superheroes on Xbox Live Arcade):
Yeah, the Marvel Vs. Capcom stuff has a definite close place in my heart, so we definitely wanna see that stuff live on.The writings all on the wall here... I'm just curious if Marvel/Capcom are going to jump at the opportunity to re-enter business together. Justin Lombros seems to be a believer. Who do we need to hassle at Capcom to make this happen?

Don't forget that SF4's producer also stated that he'd like to work on a new Marvel vs Capcom game. Check his EGM interview.
X-Men Mutant Academy 3 by Ubisoft confirmed!
(I'm not going to hold my breath for Capcom or Marvel to figure it out.)
You know, as lame as it would be, I would be more than satisfied if Marvel vs. capcom 2 ended up on one of the next gen platforms as a digital distribution. MVC3 really is a pipe dream in a lot of ways, but I honestly could see them making an effort to get MVC2 in a compact downloadable form.
Go to Petitionspot.com
type capcom on search
click on marvel vs capcom 3
then sign your name if you want capcom to regain licence to marvel theirs only 919 signatures but if u pass this message on we could soon have enough signatures to get marvel vs capcom 3 which all set and ready to go but all capcom needs is the licence to marvel.
It would be cool to see Capcom utilize their new 2 1/2-D fighting engine for Marvel vs Capcom 3. I agree it's a long-shot for that game to become a reality, period, but with EA and Marvel splitting (thank god. not my favorite games), and execs from both Capcom and Marvel wanting to see this game realized, many hopefulls, like myself begin to dream of it becoming a reality.
Only time will tell.
