Guilty Gear II Overture Updates

A few new details about Guilty Gear II Overture have been revealed from various sources this past week. The bizarre action, fighting game, RTS hybrid does appear to be developing nicely. Despite any personal feelings I have about the "turn" the series has taken, I am intrigued with what the designers have in store for Guilty Gear fans.

Basically, each battle is fought as a commander during a Holy War. Using your abilities to create and summon servants, you order your troops to strategic positions to shore up defenses and provide offensive abilities. At its basis, the battles are a complex game of Capture the Flag with the enemy commander's defeat (they have a health bar that is seen - sort of like a fighting game) is the ultimate prize.

After strategically commanding your troops, you are then able to go into a third person action mode that will allow you to take part first hand in the carnage you are creating. Not one to be content with standing back and letting others do the battling, strategically thinking commanders will be able to turn the tides of battle and push back the enemy forces with tactical decisions on the battle field and the ability to rapidly mash the attack buttons when necessary.

In a lot of ways, the game reminds me a lot of Magic the Gathering Battlegrounds mixed a bit with Warhammer 40k Dawn of War. It's nothing if not at least unique in its approach. We'll just have to wait and see if the new direction of Guilty Gear is a success when its finally released sometime this Winter for the Xbox 360.
